Volunteer roles
Gain valuable leadership skills while giving back to the community!
Dates: Weekdays June 29 – July 31 (closed July 3)
Location: On the campus of the Hopkins School, 986 Forest Road, New Haven
Hours: See each volunteer role below.
Application deadline: Both new and returning volunteers should apply using the link below. We are still considering applications for General Counselors weeks 3, 4 and 5, Tennis Coaches weeks 1, 3, and 5, and Math/Reading Tutors for any week.
Interviews: Once you submit your application we will schedule a short online interview for new applicants.
Training: All volunteers must attend the portions of orientation required for their role. The main/preferred dates are June 24, 25, and 26 (alternate dates are May 30 and 31). If you are accepted as a volunteer, we’ll discuss the required elements for your position.
Duties:
- With a counselor team, ensure a fun and productive day for about 12-16 students
Preferred minimum volunteer commitment:
- All day (8-4) for one week OR half day (8-12:30 or 12-4) for two weeks
- More weeks are encouraged – sustained relationships are beneficial for the kids!!
- We are happy to discuss alternative schedules
Desired qualities:
- Enjoys working with kids or pre-teens
- Able to work as a team with other counselors to mentor students
- Comfortable taking initiative and making decisions to ensure all students have a positive experience
Duties:
- With a team, coach tennis to small groups of kids from beginner to intermediate levels
Preferred minimum volunteer commitment:
- All day (8:30-2:30) for one week OR half day (8:30-12:30 or 12:30-2:30) for two weeks
- More weeks are encouraged – sustained relationships are beneficial for the kids!!
- We are happy to discuss alternative schedules
Desired qualities:
- Enjoys working with kids or pre-teens
- Able to work as a team with other coaches to mentor students
- Comfortable taking initiative and making decisions to ensure all students have a positive experience
Duties:
- Work with 1 or 2 students at a time to support their math skills over the summer
Preferred minimum volunteer commitment:
- 5 sessions
- Tutoring sessions take place 12:45-3:15 Tuesday and Thursday afternoons
Desired qualities:
- Enjoys working with students (grades 2-8) and showing them the fun in math
- Comfortable using our games / activities to build skills for elementary school students (math facts, multi-digit operations, fractions, etc.) and helping middle school students master foundational skills (fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, equations, etc.)
Duties:
- Work individually or with a small group of students to support their reading skills over the summer
Preferred minimum volunteer commitment:
- 5 sessions
- Reading sessions take place 9-10:30 and 10:30-noon each day
Desired qualities:
- Enjoys working with students (grades 2-8) and showing them the joy in reading
- Comfortable reading and leading discussions with students, assisting with projects, and/or using our phonics materials to help beginning readers

Staff roles
Work for New HYTEs this summer mentoring New Haven students!
Dates: Staff must be able to work all weekdays June 29 – July 31.
Location: On the campus of the Hopkins School, 986 Forest Road, New Haven

Training: All staff must be attend orientation. The tentative dates are June 24, 25, and 26. More specific info on training will be available soon.
Duties:
- Work from 8:30 am – 2:30 pm each day
- Lead a team that includes a tennis pro, tennis coaches, and assistant tennis coaches
- With the team, plan and implement group tennis lessons for around 50 students per day, from beginning to advanced intermediate levels
- Ensure participation and safety on the tennis courts
Desired qualities:
- Enjoys working with kids and teens
- Able and willing to mentor a diverse group of staff, volunteers, and students
- Comfortable taking initiative and making flexible decisions in order to meet students where they are, respond to weather or safety issues, and support young staff

Duties:
- Work 4 hours per day, potentially 10:30-2:30
- Create and implement a leadership training program for 6-10 CIT students (rising 9th and 10th graders who have come through the New HYTEs program)
- Oversee CIT students when they are placed in their roles and provide timely feedback on their performance
- Lead some academic time for CIT students
Desired qualities:
- Enjoys working with young urban teens
- Able and willing to mentor students
- Comfortable creating a fun environment while also providing firm direction and feedback as needed
- At least one year teaching in a middle / high school or similar experience preferred
Duties:
- Work from 8:00-4:00 each day
- Lead a team of counselors and assistant counselors
- With the team, ensure a fun and productive day for about 12-16 students
Desired qualities:
- Enjoys working with kids or pre-teens
- Able and willing to mentor students and other counselors
- Comfortable taking initiative and making flexible decisions to ensure the activities are successful and student behavior is appropriate
- Strongly preferred: Has previous experience working or volunteering with New HYTEs and can work all five weeks.
